Wakley iwakley@msn.com December 10, 2006, 1:00 pm The Dalles Weekly Reminder, November 22, 1984 George (Bun) Stadelman, 76, died Sunday night following a heart seizure at home. Stadelman grew up in The Dalles. He served for years on the National Republican Committee and retired from national party work following the convention in Detroit in 1980. He served as a regional vice chairman. Stadelman made a name for himself as an athlete and student body officer while at The Dalles High School and then as an athlete at the University of Oregon. His career in the family fruit and produce business led him to Europe and Asia where he opened foreign markets for apples, cherries and produce. Stadelman was born in The Dalles June 18, 1908. He became president of his freshman class in 1923 and was an outstanding athlete. He played center on the football team in 1924-25, the season after the team won the state championship. He was a center on the basketball team in 1925-26, was the shot put man in track and field, played baseball in 1925 and tennis in 1923-24. He graduated in 1926. He was a letterman 1927-29. Stadelman served on the District 12 school board and was involved in the social, civic and fraternal clubs here. He had served as mayor of The Dalles 1945-47. At the time of his death, he was president of Stadelman Fruit Company. Stadelman was a member of Sigma Nu Fraternity, was a trustee for the University of Oregon Foundation, was on the board of directors of the Oregon Crime and Delinquency Commission, was a past director of the First Interstate Bank, former treasurer of Oregon Republican party and a member of The Dalles Country Club. Stadelman is survived by his wife Lorraine (Tip) Stadelman, The Dalles, a son, George Jr., The Dalles; a daughter, Sally McEwen, Troutdale; four grandchildren, a sister; Minnie Sumner, The Dalles; a niece and a nephew. Services were Wednesday at St. Pauls Episcopal Church. Interment was private at the Odd Fellows Cemetery. Honorary pallbearers were Harold Woolsey, Ray Robinson, Joe Hillis, and Gene Adkisson.
