Wilbur Stadelman, 78, of Stadelman Fruit Co. Inc. died Friday, July 13, at St. Elizabeth Medical Center in Yakima. He was born Sept. 12. 1905 to P.J. and May Stadelman, The Dalles. He attended the University of Oregon, and was a member of the 1922 State of Oregon High School Championship Football team from The Dalles. He and his brother George bought their father's business, Stadelman Ice Co. in 1930, and formed Stadelman Fruit Co. Stadelman was the presdient and general manager. In 1954 the business was incorporated, after which he moved to Yakima. Stadelman owned and bred thoroughbred race horses. He bred and raised champion fillies. He was instrumental in the founding of Yakima Meadows and was its first president. He was a member of the Yakima Valley Grower-Shipper Assn., and served on the prune and cherry marketing commissions. He was a past member of the board of directors of the United Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Association. In 1964 he was voted Northwest cherry king. He was a past member of the Yakima Chamber of Commerce, the Knights of Columbus and the Eagles Lodge. His first wife of 39 years, Florence Stadelman, died in 1963. He is survived by his wife Marianne, his brother George (Bun) Stadelman, and his sister Minnie Sumner, The Dalles; his daughter Mary Little, Seattle; sons Peter and Michael, Yakima, and numerous grandchildren. Funeral services were held Monday, July 16, in the Holy Family Catholic Church in Yakima. Graveside services held at St. Peter Catholic Cemetery, The Dalles, the same afternoon. Memorials are suggested to St. Elizabeth's building fund, Yakima.
