On Nov. 17th, 1923, twins were born to Leroy Brown and Mable (Day) Brown. Vina Mae and Vena Mae Brown joined brothers, Keith and Oris, and a sister, Geneva. They were later joined by two younger sisters, Edith and Rita. As a teenager, she left the family ranch to explore the city. She took a job cleaning and caring for a young family in town. Working gave her a great sense of accomplishment as well as the means to pursue one of her favorite pastimes, shopping. She was especially proud of the fine winter coat that she purchased all by herself. Vina married Paul Roy Pence on May 9, 1942. Daughter Judith Marie (Pence) Shearer was born Aug. 16, 1943, and daughter, Janet Kaye (Pence) Walston was born Sept. 11, 1944. She and Paul were divorced on July 10th, 1953. She supported her two girls by managing a small hotel and restaurant. Times were tough, but her love for her two daughters kept the family strong. On June 6, 1954 she married the love of her life, Raymond Edward Springer. The two were devoted to each other and to their young daughters. He later got work in road construction, so the family traveled to many places. They were a very close-knit family. She is survived by her husband; daughters Judy and husband James Shearer and Janet and her husband John Walston; granddaughters Sherrill Ann (Walston) Swanson and Deborah Kaye (Walston) Tanner. Memorial services will be held at the New Life United Pentecostal Church in The Dalles at 1 p.m. on Friday, March 4, 2005. Cremation was held at The Dalles Win-quatt Crematory with Spencer, Libby and Powell Funeral Home in care of arrangements.
