Bertha Lydia Spletzer, 98, a resident of The Dalles, died Saturday, November 16, 2002 at a local care facility. She was born July 11, 1904 in Weston (Oregon) to Harry and Grace Pearl (Keenan) Shearer and grew up there. Following high school she moved to Spokane (Washington) and worked in food service at the veterans hospital there until her retirement. She married Albert Spletzer in 1947; he preceded her in death in 1971 and she moved to The Dalles to be near family. She was a member and past president of the Eagles Auxiliary, and loved to play bingo and pinochle. She loved animals and was preceded in death earlier this year by her 22-year-old cat, Sheba. Survivors include her niece Joyce Bates, The Dalles; and numerous great-, great-great-, and great-great-great-nieces and nephews. A celebration of life service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, November 23, 2002 at The Dalles Eagles at Seventh and Walnut streets. The family will observe private ceremonies of remembrance as her ashes are laid to rest with her husband at the Fairmount Cemetery in Spokane.
