Wakley iwakley@msn.com June 1, 2006, 11:15 am The Dalles Weekly Reminder, October 23, 1987 Eugene "Jake" Howard Spencer, 70, died in The Dalles Oct. 17. He lived here since 1964. Mr. Spencer was born in Wasco Oct. 6, 1917. He attended school in Wasco and graduated from Oregon State School of Engineering in 1941. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy and reached the rank of Lt. Commander. He was Executive Officer on the naval ship "Leedstown" when it was sunk off the coast of Algiers, and was landing craft commander during the D-Day invasion. He was a member of the First Christian Church in Wasco, the Oregon Wheat League, Sherman County Grain Growers, American Legion #114, Frank E. Brown Post, Oregon State Sheriff's Association. Chapel services were held at Smith Callaway Chapel, followed by interment at Odd Fellows Cemetery in The Dalles. Military Rites were given by Sherman Co. Veterans Organizations. Honorary pallbearers were Fritz Watkins, Joe Miller, Don Miller, George Moon; active bearers were Gib Wiley, Carl Welch, Fred Anderson, Don McDermid, Malcolm McDermid and Tom Macnab. Donations in his memory are suggested to the American Cancer Society.
