Wakley iwakley@msn.com May 31, 2006, 10:09 pm The Dalles Weekly Reminder, March 6, 1987 Clarence O. Spencer, 75, died March 2 in The Dalles. He had lived here 15 years. Mr. Spencer was born in Wasco, Oregon Jan. 9, 1912. He married his wife, Cleora, in 1945. She preceded him in death. He was a member of the Oregon Wheat Growers, a charter member of the VFW post in Wasco, a member of the National Rifle Association, a past Sherman County Deputy Sheriff. He was awarded the Purple Heart while a member of the U.S. Army during WWII in the Guadalcanal campaign. He farmed in Wasco until he moved to The Dalles in 1974. He is survived by his son, Howard E. Spencer of Wasco; two daughters, Margaret DePaepe of Rufus and Mary Icard of Spokane; 11 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; a brother, Eugene Spencer of The Dalles; a sister, Beatrice Howell of The Dalles; one nephew, Robert Howell; and step-son, Richard Booth of Coos Bay. Services were held at Smith Callaway Chapel, officiated by the Rev. June Fothergil. Donations may be made in his memory to the Sherman County Scholarship Fund.
