Smith, 78, died on Wednesday, May 14 in Goldendale (Washington). He was born on January 4, 1925 in Hamilton, Montana to Floyd and Bessie Smith. The family moved to Goldendale in the early 1930's living in the orchard heights area before moving into town. He attended Goldendale schools until 1943 when he joined the US Air Force serving as a Staff Sergeant with the 92nd Bomb Group B-17's as a ball turret gunner in the European theater stationed in England. He married Jacqueline Kitchens on November 1, 1946 in Goldendale. He was called back to active duty during the Korean Conflict and was stationed in Japan with the 98th Bomb Group of B-29's. He was employed by Klickitat Pine Box Co. during the late 1940s and was a car inspector for the Northern Pacific railroad. He later became a printer, working at the Goldendale Sentinel for many years. He became semi-retired in 1987. He also delivered meals to the elderly through the Senior Center. He liked computers and woodworking and he loved to travel. He is survived by his wife Jackie of Goldendale, three sons, Michael G. Smith of Yakima (Washington), Dale W. Smith of Seattle (Washington) and Steven J. Smith of Forest Grove (Oregon). One brother, Albert Smith, and one sister, Zelma Ziegenfuss, both of Goldendale also survive. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, May 17 at 1 p.m. in the chapel of Erdman Funeral Home in Goldendale, with Pastor Ken Akins officiating. Interment will be in the veterans' section of Mt.
