Smith Sr., 86, a resident of The Dalles, died after a short illness Sunday, Oct. 31, 2004, at Providence Medical Center in Portland with his extended family at his side. He was born May 7, 1918, in Phil Campbell, Ala., to Harry and Oma Bates Smith. His older brothers were Hoke and Earl, both of whom preceeded him in death. His father was a carpenter and taught the trade to his son, who used those skills the rest of his life. He graduated from high school in Sheffield, Ala., in 1936, after which he worked as an apprentice and then journeyman carpenter. He survived the Great Depression in the South, World War II in the Pacific and went on to create a loving and successful family in The Dalles. In 1942 he enlisted in the Navy and was a member of the Seabees, which took him to Alaska, Saipan and Okinawa, where he helped build airfields and military bases. He was stationed near Oakland, Calif., when he met Dolores D. Moore. They married on July 8, 1944 in Alameda. He was honorably discharged from the Navy in November 1945. He went to work as a carpenter for J.H. Baxter Co. in Alameda and built their house in Castro Valley, Calif. In January 1956 he took the opportunity to become foreman of Baxter’s framing yard in The Dalles. He retired from Baxter in June 1983 after 37 years with the company. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Dolores, their three children and eight grandchildren: Stephen and Patty Smith, Vancouver, Wash., and their sons, Brian Smith, Vancouver, and David Smith, Seattle; Quinton Jr. and Kathi Smith, Damascus, and their four children, Cameron, Kenneth, Katie and Kristine; and Lynn and Pat Gannon, Sherwood, and their two daughters, Maura and Alaina. One of the great passions in his life was golf, which he discovered in the early 1960s. He passed that passion along to his wife and each of his children. His lowest handicap was a 6 and after retirement he played three or four times a week. About the age of 72 he began taking great pleasure in shooting his age at least once a year and he continued that feat until this year. He served several terms on the board of The Dalles Country Club and one term as president. He made great friends on the golf course and in the clubhouse afterwards playing “Pitch.” He was a member of Zion Lutheran Evangelical Church in The Dalles, also serving on its board and as president. He volunteered for 20 years at Mid- Columbia Hospital and drove for Meals on Wheels. A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 3, at Zion Lutheran Church, 101 W. Tenth St., The Dalles, with a reception to follow at The Dalles Country Club. Remembrances to Zion Lutheran Scholarship Fund, Friends of the Wasco County Library, or Mid-Columbia Health Center Foundation.
