Smith, 64, who owned, managed and supervised grocery stores when he lived in The Dalles, died Sunday at his home at Northwestern Lake near White Salmon in Klickitat County, Washington. He was born January 17, 1923 in North Powder, and graduated from high school in Rockaway. After serving in the U.S. Army from 1941 to 1945, he came to The Dalles in 1948 and managed the Safeway store until 1953 when he moved to Portland. He came back to The Dalles in 1957 and supervised Hilltop Market and Easthill Market in The Dalles and what is now Holcomb Sentry in Goldendale. He bought Easthill Market in 1969 and it became Sentry Market shortly thereafter. He continued run that store until 1982 when his son, Lynn, and his wife, Cheryl, bought the store. Mr. Smith was a veteran of World War II with the U.S. Army and landed in Normandy on D-Day. He was a member of the Elks and was on the board of directors for United Grocers from 1978 to 1981. Funeral services will be private for family only at Spencer, Libby & Powell Funeral Home.
