Wakley iwakley@msn.com and August 3, 2006, 1:03 am The Dalles Chronicle, May 18, 2006 Clifford Leon Smith, 90, a resident of The Dalles, died at the local hospital on Sunday, May 14, 2006. He was born in Portland on Aug. 16, 1915 the younger of two children to Omar E. and Elizabeth (Bessie) V. (Snipes) Smith. At 12, his mother died and he moved to The Dalles and was raised by his Aunt Jeanette (Snipes) Martin. At 17, his father remarried and he moved back to the Portland area to live with him, graduating in 1934 from Benson High School. After he graduated from high school he began working. He married Margaret (Polly) Allen in The Dalles on Aug. 25, 1940. In 1942 he enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Force where he served during World War II. He was stationed in Italy and responsible for maintenance of P-38 Air planes. After the service they moved to Medford, where their daughter Elaine was born. Then they moved to Portland, where their son Douglas was born. In 1953 he moved back to The Dalles and purchased McFadden Auto parts, which he sold in 1963. He then worked for DePriest Farm Supply in Dufur, Atkinson Motors in the parts department, and then General Auto Supply until his retirement in 1980. He was known by his close friends as “Soapy.” He was a member of the Elks Lodge, Mid-Columbia Car Club and Swap & Swing Square Dance Club. He attended Calvary Baptist Church in The Dalles and loved his 1930 Model A and 1950 Chevy Coupe. He is survived by his daughter, Elaine and her husband Gary Simpson of Hood River; his son, Doug Smith and his wife Cathy of Vancouver, Wash.; six grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife Polly and his sister, Ramona Morrow. Service information will be announced at a later date. Smith Callaway Chapel is in care of arrangements.
