The Dalles Weekly Reminder, December 8, 1995
     Ernest Clyde Smith, 93, a resident of Quincy, Wash. for the last 13 
years, formerly of Kent, died in Quincy on Sunday, Dec. 3, 1995.
     He was born Oct. 13, 1902, on the family farm in Beaverton, the eighth of 
11 children, to Daniel and Eleanor (Reim) Smith.  He joined the Navy in 1920, 
at age 17, then returned to Sherman County.
     He married Nell McKay on Aug. 27, 1928 in Moro.
     He worked for Union Pacific Railroad for a number of years, then worked 
at Grass Valley Grain Growers until his retirement in 1964.  He also operated 
the Grass Valley General Store.
     An avid fisherman and hunter, he was the recipient of the State of Oregon 
Pioneer License.  He was a life member of IOOF Lodge #75 and Sherman County 
Masonic Lodge #99 and had held membership in other civic and fraternal 
organizations.
     He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Nell of Quincy, Wash.; son and 
daughter-in-law, William and Elaine Smith of Kent; daughters and sons-in-law, 
Joyce and Wallace Short and Virginia and Jack Cox, all of Quincy, Wash.; 12 
grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; his 
sister, Phyllis Heing of Salem and many nieces and nephews.  He was preceded 
in death by his parents, five brothers, four sisters, an infant son, an infant 
granddaughter and a grandson.
     Services will be held Saturday, Dec. 9, at 11 a.m. at Kent Baptist 
Church.  Interment follows at Kent Community Cemetery.
     Memorials:  Sherman County Museum or Kent Baptist Church in care of 
Spencer, Libby and Powell Funeral Home, 1100 Kelly Ave., The Dalles.
