She was born Aug. 13, 1904 in Wasco, the daughter of George M. and Alice (Frazier) Porter. Her early education was in the one room school of Locust Grove. She moved to Portland and attended Oregon State College in 1921, majoring in business. She first married Chester Miller in 1922 and he preceded her in death in 1936. In June, 1944 she enlisted in the United States Army where she was assigned to the 1st Air Force, decoding messages and preparing combat reports. She was honorably discharged in July, 1945. She and a group of patriotic ladies served tea and biscuits to President Herbert Hoover during his second run for president, which he lost to Roosevelt. They kept the biscuits to use for another event, and she called it “Hooverizing”. This was due to the time (the depression). Her career included working as buyer of better dresses for the Meier & Frank Store, and in her day, was recognized by the merchandise market as one of the foremost buyers in the country. Their fashion editor touted her in the Denver Post when she headed the new Columbine Shop. It was in Denver where she met and married James P. Smith, owner of the Honolulu Meat Market in Portland, on the landmark spot where Pioneer Place shops are now located. During her sixties and seventies, as a licensed tax preparer, she spent several years employed by H&R Block, specializing in estate tax return preparation. Always active in the Portland Rose Festival, she grew and nurtured at one time more than 350 roses at her home. She won numerous awards and was passionate about the grooming and care of roses and enjoyed teaching others to appreciate their beauty, as well. She also loved animals and annually supported the Humane Society with contributions. Her favorite pet, a cat named Blitz, was one of her many companions accompanying her in her gardens. Her husband James, preceded her in death in 1985 and she remained in their home until well into her 90’s. Survivors include her niece, D. Bhradde Mae Collins and her family; her nephew, Milton Zell and his family and a sister-in-law. Graveside services will be on Tuesday, April 19, 2005 at 1 p.m. at the Sunrise Cemetery in Wasco, where her mother and other family members are buried. Memorials may be made to the Oregon Humane Society. Additional Comments: Written permission to reprint given by The Dalles Chronicle, The Dalles, Oregon, Dan Spatz, Editor (e-mail dated 3/7/2006).
