She was born Aug. 23, 1917, in The Dalles, the youngest of three children to John J. and Murta Belle (Huggins) Van Dellen. She grew up in The Dalles and graduated from The Dalles High School in 1936 then graduated from the University of Oregon in 1940 with a degree in journalism and writing. She had worked at her father’s lumber yard, The Dalles Clinic and wrote occasional columns for The Dalles Chronicle. She married Dr. John H. Skirving, M.D., on December 28, 1943, in The Dalles. She was a member of United Church of Christ Congregational and Chapter BF of PEO. She was also active with the Women’s Auxiliary of Mid Columbia Medical Center, a volunteer at Old St. Peter Landmark, Meals on Wheels, Mayflower Guild, Wasco County Historical Society, International Order of Rainbow Girls and The Dalles Country Club. She is survived by her husband of 61 years, Dr. John H. Skirving, M.D., The Dalles; her children, Sandra J. Ward, The Dalles; Robert J. and his wife, Missi Skirving, Portland; Michon Filion Skirving, Portland; John C. Ward, The Dalles; her grandchildren and their spouses, Kimberly K. (Skirving) and James Douglas, Camas, Wash.; Melissa T. (Skirving) and Scott Jackson, Kapaa, Kauai; John Jason and Deanna Skirving, Gresham; Jennifer K. Ward, The Dalles; Carrie A. Ward, Kennewick, Wash.; Ben Skirving, Eliana Skirving and Caleb Skirving, all of Portland; step grandchildren, Rachel, Sarah, Andrew and Jared, all of Portland; great grandchildren, Makaila, Jacob and Taylen, all of Portland; her sister, Frances Ray, Olympia, Wash.; nieces and nephews, Holloway McCluskey, Hillsboro; Jan and Mike Hanson, Salem; Sue and Martin Harding, Tumwater, Wash., and Doug and Barbara Ray, Carnation, Wash. She was preceded in death by her brother, John Van Dellen and sister-in-law, Mary Ann Skirving Mulick. Viewing visitation will be held at Spencer, Libby and Powell Funeral Home from 2 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 3 and 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. on Thursday. Funeral services will be held at United Church of Christ, Congregational, 5th and Court Sts., at 11 a.m., on Thursday, Nov. 4, with Pastor Karl Vercouteren officiating. Interment will follow at The Dalles 18th Street IOOF Cemetery. Remembrances may be made to Meals on Wheels, 1112 W. 9th St., The Dalles, OR 97058.
