Wakley iwakley@msn.com April 16, 2006, 11:00 am The Dalles Chronicle, October 3, 2005 Dr. John Holloway Skirving, 88, a former mayor and city councilor, and resident of The Dalles for 82 years, died at a local care center Friday, Sept. 30, 2005. He was born March 15, 1917 in Wapato, Wash., the youngest of three children to Seymore and Cecil (Holloway) Skirving. He moved to The Dalles in 1932 with his family. He was raised here, graduating from The Dalles High School. He enrolled at University of Oregon where he graduated in pre-medicine, then moved to Omaha, Neb., completing medical school at Creighton University. He joined the Army and was stationed in Germany during World War II. Upon returning from Germany, he worked for Mid-Columbia Hospital, serving many years as a general practitioner. On Dec. 28, 1943, he married Betty Jane VanDellen, whom he had met in junior high school. He was a member of UCC Congregational Church, Elks, Quarter Horse Assoc., Sheriff’s Sheriff’s Reserve, American Medical Association and was a former President of Fort Dalles Rodeo Association, The Dalles Country Club Member and Loyal Order of Fowl Fellows. He also was a cattle rancher out Threemile Road. He served as city councilman at large for nine years and was Mayor of The Dalles for nine years and later served on the city’s Historic Landmarks Commission and served County Coroner and Medical Examiner. He was member of the Cattleman’s Associaion. He was named Man of The Year in 1971, and delivered over 4,200 babies in The Dalles while working as a doctor. He is survived by his son, Robert John and his wife Missi Skirving; his daughter Sandra Ward, son-in-law, John Ward and daughter-in-law, Michon Skirving; 12 grandchildren, Jennifer and Carrie Ward, Kimberly Douglas, Melissa Jackson, Jason, Rachel, Andrew, Sarah, Jerod, Ben, Eliana and Caleb Skirving; four great- grandchildren, Makaila, Jake and Taylen Skirving, and Andrew Douglas, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, Betty Jane Skirving, his brother, Dayton Skirving and his sister Maryanne Mulick. Viewing visitation will be held Tuesday Oct. 4, 2005 from 2 to 7 p.m. and Wednesday from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. at Spencer, Libby and Powell Funeral Home. Funeral Services will be held at UCC Congregational Church on Wednesday, Oct. 5, 2005 at 11 a.m. with Rev. Karl Vercouteran officiating. Graveside services will follow at IOOF Cherry Heights Road. Memorials may be made to Oregon Veteran’s Home, 700 Veterans Drive, The Dalles, OR 97058.
