Wakley iwakley@msn.com April 21, 2006, 2:52 pm The Dalles Chronicle, March 10, 2006 Maurice Clair Sholl, 79, a resident of The Dalles, died peacefully March 9, 2006 at the local hospital surrounded by his wife, children, and grandchildren. He was born Aug. 21, 1926 in Hicksville, Ohio. He served his country in the Army Air Corp and was honorably discharged Nov. 27, 1945. He graduated from Michigan State University in 1950 with a degree in Forest Management. On Sept. 20, 1950, he married his wife of 55 years, Betty Laura Jackson, in Lansing, Mich. He began a long and successful career centered around his love of nature by working as a game warden for the State of Ohio in 1951. In 1957, he moved with his wife and four children to the Tieton Ranger Station near White Pass, Wash. There, he worked for the US. Forest Service as a Ranger and Wildlife Biologist. He continued his career in the Forest Service in Portland, and finally in Dufur. After retiring in 1987, he actively pursued his interests in golfing, fishing, hunting, gardening, and bird watching. An avid woodworker, he built countless pieces of furniture and home décor for family and friends. He was a charter member of Bethany Lutheran Church of The Dalles. He was also a longtime member of The Dalles Country Club. He was preceded in death by his parents, Maurice H. and Freda Sholl; brother Norman LeeSholl ; and grandson , Ryan Sholl. He is survived by wife, Betty; children: Daniel A. Sholl and wife Lori, Guanajuato, Mexico; Margaret E. Sammons, The Dalles; Jeanne A. Michaels and husband Geno, Portland; Gwendolyn J. Sholl, Corvallis; grandchildren: Felix Herrada and wife Laurel; Camille Sarder and husband Mahmud; Natasha Manion; Rory Sholl; Evan Michaels; Keith Michaels; Vanessa Michaels; great grandchildren: William and Natalie Herrada; and Eva Sarder. Private cremation was held in The Dalles, with Spencer, Libby and Powell in care of arrangements. At his request, his ashes will be spread over nearby mountains. A memorial service followed by a reception to celebrate Maury’s life will be held on Sunday, March 12 at 5 p.m. at Bethany Lutheran Church, 2323 E. 12th St., The Dalles.
