He was born in Outlook, Wash. on Nov. 10, 1912, the oldest of three children to George William and Dora Ellen (Partch) Shockley. He began his education at Independence School near the family farm in the Yakima Valley. He entered fifth grade at Outlook and graduated from high school in 1933, followed by attendance at Hemphill Diesel Engineering in Tacoma. He married Doris Lorraine Hill in 1936 and began his career as an auto mechanic and owner of a service station in Sumner, Wash. During World War II he worked for Boeing Aircraft as a tool and die maker. In 1944 he and his family moved to Tacoma where he worked as a mechanic serving trucks for a dairy. The family moved to Port Angeles in 1950 where he was a mechanic for a car dealership before building his own service station and penthouse. He divorced his first wife in 1957 and married Viola (Hermann) Dickson in 1961. After retiring in 1970 they traveled extensively in their motor home and wintered in Yuma, Ariz., for many years. They moved to The Dalles in 1979, where his wife died in 1988. As a memorial to her he spent hours volunteering at the senior center and tended the rose garden there. He sang with the Senior Serenaders. He enjoyed dancing, cruises to Bermuda and Alaska and going to the annual family reunion. He was the last living member of his school class. His hobbies included playing the organ, accordion and guitar, although he never had formal musical training. He belonged to the Order of Foresters and spent two terms as Chief Ranger. He was baptized in Outlook at the church of the Brethren, which was founded by his grandfather Partch. He was a past member of the First Baptist Church in Port Angeles. Survivors include his daughters, Deanna Lee Meyers, Everett, Wash.; Carol Jean Strom and son-in-law, Howard, Othello, Wash.; Peggy Ann Adamich and son- in-law, Edward, Port Angeles; eight grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Claude and Harry Shockley, and his namesake grandson, Christopher Charles Ackenhausen. Private family graveside services were held in The Dalles with burial next to his wife, Viola. Memorials may be made to “Make a Wish Foundation” or a charity of the donors choice. Spencer, Libby & Powell Funeral Home was in care of arrangements. Funeral Notice A celebration of life will be held for Schockley on Friday, Nov. 19, at 1:30 p.m. at Mill Creek Point.
