Surnames: Shimp, Halverson, Shefstad, Sigl, Long, Stuart Pauline "Pudge" Ethel Shimp, 61, a resident of The Dalles for 49 years, died at a Portland hospital on Tuesday, May 20, 2003. She was born December 29, 1941, in Bonners Ferry, Idaho, the youngest of three children to Melvin Clinton and Fern Ida (Halverson) Shefstad. She spent her childhood years growing up and attending schools in Bonners Ferry, Idaho, Davenport, Washington, Harrington, Washington, Umatilla (Oregon) and settling in The Dalles at age 14 where she finished her schooling. She married Larry Browning Shimp on September 3, 1959, in The Dalles. She worked at The Dalles Pharmacy as a "soda jerk" and assistant bookkeeper through high school until going to work for Sears in The Dalles as credit manager, where she worked until a serious railroad accident involving her husband, Larry, made resigning necessary. After 3 years of nursing her husband through his rehabilitation, she went to work for The Dalles Credit Bureau until about 1975, when she then quit becoming a full time "professional domestic engineer". She looked forward to warm weather and winter travel. She loved her family, friends, gardening, hummingbirds, watching the night sky, angels and was a "garage sale goddess." She is survived by her husband Larry of 44 years, The Dalles; her daughters and their spouses, Jeanene and Max Sigl, Hood River (Oregon); Vonnie and Mickey Long, Granbury, Texas; her son, L. Todd Shimp and his fiancé Nancy Scott, The Dalles; her daughter-in-law, Diane Shimp, The Dalles; her grandchildren, Amanda, Katelyn, Tharen, Joshua, Corey, Cassandra, Kurtis, Cesilee and Tyson, her sister and husband, Maxine and Denny Stuart, Westin, Oregon; numerous nieces, nephews, extended family and friends. She was preceded in death by her father Melvin Shefstad, her mother, Fern Shefstad, and her brother, Myron Shefstad in June 2002. Memorial services will be held at Spencer, Libby and Powell Funeral home at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 24 with Reverend David Clear Officiating. Private cremation was held at The Dalles Win-quatt Crematory. Memorials may be made to Doernbecher Children's Foundation, 1121 S.W. Salmon Street, Portland, Oregon 97205.
