Wakley iwakley@msn.com June 1, 2006, 4:06 pm The Dalles Chronicle, April 15, 2006 Mary Jane (Peters) Coats Sheridan, 62, a longtime resident of Portland and former resident of The Dalles, died on April 1 at her daughter’s home in Portland after a two year battle with ovarian cancer. She was born Nov. 27, 1943 in Bremerton, Wash. to Richard E. and Edna (Wilson) Peters. The family moved to Portland and then to The Dalles during the construction of The Dalles Dam. She graduated from The Dalles High School and received a B.A. in English at Whitworth University in Spokane. She taught school in Tacoma and at David Douglas High in Portland. In Nov. of 1966 she married Dr. James Anthony Coats, DMD, of Lake Oswego, and they lived in Portland until his death in 1995. In 1996 she married Thomas R. Sheridan, Richland, Wash.; and in 1998 they moved to Long Island, N.Y. They moved back to Richland in 2005. She is survived by her brother, Edna Peters, The Dalles; two brothers, Richard and Paul, Auburn, Wash. and Troutdale, respectively; a sister, Patricia Estlund, Salem; daughter, Michelle Coats Vranizan and son, James Anthony Coats Jr., both of Portland; a stepdaughter, Shelly Sheridan, Gresham; and five grandchildren, Gus, Charlie and Joe Vranizan, and Mia and James Coats. She was preceded in death by her father, Richard Peters. A memorial service will be held April 18 at 2 p.m. at Sunset Presbyterian Church; 14996 NW Cornell Road, Portland, with Rev. Molly Teichert of Westchester, N.Y. officiating. A reception will follow at the Portland Golf Club, 5900 Scholls Ferry Road in Portland. Ashes are interred at Finley-Sunset Hills Cemetery at 6901 SW Sunset Highway. Donations in lieu of flowers may be made to Oregon Health Sciences University (OHSU) Center for Women’s Health, Ovarian Cancer Fund, 3181 SW Sam Jackson Blvd., Portland, OR 97239.
