Scully, 82, a resident of the Veterans Home in The Dalles, died on March 20, 2004. He was born in Saugerties, N.Y. on Nov. 13, 1922, the youngest of 10 children. The family moved to New York City, where his father was a stonecutter. The mother became too ill to care for him and his nine siblings. He was placed in St. John’s Catholic Orphanage in Brooklyn, N.Y. This was his home until he attended Peter Stuyesant Vocational School. Three days after his 20th birthday, he enlisted in the Army Air Force. He flew a B-17 bomber in over 30 combat missions during World War II and received the Air Medal with four Oak Leaf Clusters, Distinguished Flying Cross and the European-Middle Eastern-Africa Air Medal. After three years in England, Africa, Italy and France, he separated at Fort Dix, N.J. in September 1945. He studied decorating and upholstery and worked for Danby & Co. in New York. He had contracts for the Waldorf Astoria and prominent clients like Julie Eisenhower, Judy Garland, Sophia Loren and the King and Queen of England. He worked on sets for Broadway plays and TV shows such as Robert Montgomery Presents. He retired from Lake Oswego Decorators in 1988. In 1948 he met Sigrid Schreyer while waiting for a train. They married in Purling, NY. on Sept. 9, 1950. With their three children, they lived in New Jersey, New Mexico, Colorado and Oregon. Upon retirement they fulfilled a lifetime dream and bought a ranch in Colorado. On a visit to Oregon, he fell, developed Alzheimer’s and became a resident at Oregon Veterans Home. He loved God, his children, family, home and dogs. He was a semipro bowler, enjoyed photography, sports, music and crafts. He looked forward to family vacations at farms and ranches across America and was proud to say he had been in 48 states. Survivors are his wife, Sigrid; son Tom and Melissa; daughters Susan and Bill Philo and Janet Scully; grandchildren Wyatt Scully, Hap Purden, Dan Murray, Meghan Murray, Chris Philo, and great grandchild Brooke Murray. Memorial celebration will be at Andersons Tribute Center on Sunday, March 28, at 1 p.m. A public reception will be held following the service. Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association c/o Andersons Tribute Center 1401 Belmont Hood River, OR 97031. Burial will be in Willamette National Cemetery in Portland at a later date.
