Wakley iwakley@msn.com December 31, 2006, 8:34 pm The Dalles Chronicle, October 3, 2006 Victor Schroeder, 90, a former resident of The Dalles, died in Redmond on Aug. 29,2006. He was born Feb. 2, 1916 in Hillsboro, Kan., to Otto and Mary Schroeder. He attended school in that community, which was a German Mennonite community with a weekly newspaper printed in German. In 1942 during World War II he joined the U.S. Army. Upon learning he spoke fluent German the Army assigned him to work with German prisoners. He served in Africa, Italy and France and was awarded the Distinguished Unit citation. Following his discharge he assumed a portion of the family business, distributing oil in the Hillsboro, Kan., area. He was active in and served as president of the American Legion, VFW and Kiwanis groups there. He was also a 32nd degree Mason in Wichita, Kan., and a member of the First Mennonite Church. In 1952 he met Jane Foster, who was an extension agent but had just accepted a position in Wasco County in Oregon. They became engaged and married on July 18, 1954 in Altamont, Kan. Their first home was in The Dalles where she did extension work and he worked in the furniture sales business with Stipe Furniture. In 1959 they moved to Redmond and he managed a furniture store there for eight years, they bought his own store in Madras and operated it from 1968 to 1975. After retiring he worked in real estate in Redmond. In 1980 they became active tour guides and traveled throughout the world. They were active in the Community Presbyterian Church. He enjoyed camping, boating, hiking, the outdoors and being with family. Survivors include his wife, Jane, Redmond; children, Gary Schroeder, Ft. Collins, Colo.; and Jennie Houck, Redmond; and two grandchildren. Memorial services were held on Sept. 8 in Redmond. Burial was at the Redmond Cemetery.
