Schmidt, 92, a former resident of The Dalles, died Oct. 7, 2004 at her home in Hartline, Wash. She was born to Thomas and Alice Stover on Jan. 29, 1912 in Russell, N.D. She was the youngest of seven children. Her family relocated to northeast Montana and homesteaded. Later she co-managed a restaurant and soda fountain in Nashua, Mont. It was there that she met Karl (Spike) Schmidt who worked at Fort Peck Dam. They married in 1936. He went to work in Panama for the Pan Canal Company in the fall of 1939 where she and their daughter Shary joined him in 1940. Their daughter Muriel was born in Panama in 1941. They returned to the United States in 1948 for the construction of the McNary Dam. He then worked at Garrison Dam in North Dakota, and returned to Oregon to The Dalles Dam and John Day Dam. In The Dalles, she worked at and later managed Phillips Ladies Apparel. She moved to live with her daughter Shary and son-in-law Clyde, in Hartline in 1999. She was a member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, the Duplicate Bridge Club, and the “Brown Baggers,” an extra special group of friends who played bridge together for almost 50 years. She was preceded in death by daughter Muriel in 1966, husband Karl (Spike) in 1978, four brothers and two sisters. She is survived by daughter, Shary Jump and her husband, Clyde; granddaughter Laura Kozma and her husband, Matt; grandson Tim Jump and his wife, Amy; granddaughter Mary Davey and her husband, Ron; grandson Chris Stevenson; grandson Rick Stevenson and his wife, Kelley; grandson Jon Stevenson and his wife, Jerrie; nine great-grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
