The Dalles Weekly Reminder, March 3, 1983
     Adolph August Schlichting, 86, a longtime resident of The Dalles, died 
Feb. 28 at his home in The Dalles where he lived with his daughter.
     He was born Oct. 8, 1896 in Superior, Wis.
     Mr. Schlichting was a veteran of World War I and served as a musician 
first class with the United States Army Engineers Band until 1919.  In 1921, 
he married Bessie Marie Carlson in Minot, N. D. and soon after entered the 
education field and taught music and commercial subjects and served in an 
administrative position.
     He moved to The Dalles in 1946 and taught at The Dalles High School 
before he retired from the faculty in 1954.  He then moved to California where 
he taught in Palo Verde College and later at Skadron Business College in San 
Bernadino.  While in California he worked on a lifetime hobby and interest, 
the perfecting and revision of the standard typewriter keyboard.
     He moved back to The Dalles in 1968 and has lived here since then.  He 
was a member of Zion Lutheran Church.
     Survivors include his daughter, Mrs. Mary Ann Meyer, The Dalles; a son, 
Fred Schlichting, Tacoma, Wash.; two sisters, Mrs. Flora Burt, Roundup, Mont., 
and Mrs. Myrtle Robeson, Cherokee, Iowa; 11 grandchildren and five great-
grandchildren.  A son, Dr. James Schlichting, The Dalles died in April of 
1981, and his wife died in May of 1981.
     Funeral services are at Zion Lutheran Church Saturday at 11 a.m. with the 
Rev. Delmer Anderson officiating.  Burial is at The Dalles IOOF Cemetery.
     Memorials are suggested to Zion Lutheran Church Memorial Fund.
     Spencer, Libby & Powell Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
