He was born January 11, 1931, in Scotts Bluff, Nebraska, the oldest of five children to George John and Rosy Linda (Sladawitz) Schanaman. He worked as a farm hand in Montana, before joining the U.S. Army in the early 1950's and was later given a medical discharge. He lived in Portland before moving to The Dalles in 1959. He worked as a cook at the Recreation, Lone Pine, Kopper Kitchen and Denny's restaurants in The Dalles and had volunteered with The Dalles fire and police departments. Survivors include his sons, Randy and Robert Schanaman, Camas, Washington; three grandchildren; his brother, Dale Schanaman and sister, Carol Gilbert, of Kingman, Arizona. He was preceded in death by a son, LeRoy Jr., October 5, 2002, and his other siblings. At his request, no public services will be held. Private cremation was held at The Dalles Win-quatt Crematory with Smith Callaway Chapel in care of arrangements. Interment of cremains will be held at Willamette National Cemetery in Portland.
