The Dalles Chronicle, March 5, 2004
     Stephen Edwin Schallhorn, 60, a resident of Portland, formerly of The 
Dalles, died at a Portland care facility Saturday, Feb. 28, 2004.
     He was born May 19, 1943, in San Francisco, the second of five children 
born to Naomi Pearl (Jones) and the late Edward Schallhorn. 
     He grew up in The Dalles, where he attended St. Mary’s Academy and 
graduated from The Dalles High School in 1961, then attended Oregon State 
University and Eastern Oregon College.
     He worked for many years in the insurance business in Portland, Reno, 
Nev., Newport and Bend. He was an environmentalist who worked hard to bring 
Keiko to the Oregon Coast Aquarium. 
     He was an outdoorsman interested in kayaking, whale watching and 
counting, and hiking.
     He is survived by two sons, Jon Schallhorn, Portland and Chad Schallhorn, 
Seattle; his mother, Naomi Wandel, Portland; sisters, Julian Schallhorn, Orcas 
Island, Wash.; Theresa Kelley, Silverton; Mary Anghilante, The Dalles; and 
Laurie Krause, Alta Loma, Calif.; 12 nieces and nephews and four great-nieces 
and nephews.
     Remembrances will be held in conjunction with the disposition of his 
cremains. Private cremation was held at The Dalles Win-quatt Crematory with 
Spencer, Libby and Powell Funeral Home in care of arrangements.
