She was born in Eugene on April 25, 1925, to John S. Hurd and Belle Tyler, and grew up outside Coburg, on Golden Glow Acres, the Hurd family farm. She attended school in Coburg, graduating with honors on May 22, 1942. She continued her schooling at the University of Oregon as a member of Alpha Omicron Pi sorority, obtaining a bachelor of science degree in 1946. She met her first husband, Samuel C. Sargent, an engineering geologist, while at the university. They were married in November 1943. The family lived in The Dalles, during the building of The Dalles Dam, moving to Venezuela for several years in the late 1950’s, then returning to The Dalles for the building of John Day Dam in 1959. She returned to the University of Oregon to obtain her teaching degree in 1963. She taught biology at Wahtonka High School for 18 years before retiring. She married Everett Marvel in July of 1973 and lived in Dufur for several years. She operated Sargent’s Greens, a custom plant care business from 1980 until 1992. She traveled extensively, including trips to the Amazon, Peru, Venezuela, China, Papua New Guinea, Australia and numerous other locations. She was a Master Gardener, a member of the Native Plant Society of Oregon, The Dalles Art Association, the National Organization for Women, OPB, University Women, and many others. She is survived by her son, John Sargent, his wife, Suzanne, and their children, Evan and Erin, Vancouver, Wash.; her daughter, Louise Sargent and Louise’s husband Gary Betts, and their daughter Juniper Sargent-Betts, Dufur; nephews and nieces, Glenn Hurd, Janet Gibson, Sarah Smith and Clinton Hurd. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Samuel C. Sargent, her parents John and Belle Hurd, her brothers, Roscoe and Robert Hurd. A gathering of friends will be held at The Dalles Art Center, Fourth and Washington, The Dalles at 5:30 p.m. on Friday, May 6. Memorial contributions can be made to The Dalles Art Center, or the Oregon Native Plant Society. Arrangements are by Columbia Cremation & Burial.
