Surnames: Ryan, Rogers, Shearer William Thomas Ryan, 87, a resident of The Dalles, died at a local care facility on Friday, May 2, 2003. He was born September 11, 1915, in Syracuse, New York, the oldest of three children to Daniel J. and Marguerite (Rogers) Ryan. He grew up and was educated through college in Syracuse. He served in the Civilian Conservation Corps, coming to Wasco County in 1939, then entered the US Army. He served as a career soldier, including service in World War II, Korea and Vietnam, retiring in 1970. Subsequent to retirement, he operated a small cattle ranch on Cherry Heights for about 25 years. In 1997, he sold the ranch. Bill was a member of St. Peter Catholic Church and Knights of Columbus. He enjoyed the outdoors, his farm and traveling. He married Matilda Davis Shearer in Reno, Nevada on February 8, 1940 and she preceded him in death in 1976. Survivors include his stepsons and their wives, C.R. and Rojean Shearer, Lebanon (Oregon) and John W. and Barbara Shearer, The Dalles, their families and a number of nieces and nephews on the East Coast. His brother and sister also preceded him in death. Viewing visitation will be held at Spencer, Libby & Powell Funeral Home on Tuesday, May 6, from 2 to 7 p.m. and 9 to 10 a.m. on Wednesday. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, May 7, at St. Peter Catholic Church with Reverend Todd Unger as celebrant. Interment with military rites will follow at The Dalles IOOF Cemetery. Remembrances may be made to St. Mary School Foundation, 112 Cherry Heights Road, The Dalles, Oregon 97058.
