The Dalles Weekly Reminder, February 23, 1996
     Mary Jane Rust, 91, The Dalles, died at a local care center Jan. 29, 1996.
     She was born Jan. 22, 1905, in Grass Valley, the second of 13 children to 
Benjamin F. and Minnie May (Ashley) Payne.  She grew up in Grass Valley.
     She married Conrad A. Rust on June 15, 1927, in The Dalles.  They lived 
in Sherman County until 1935, then moved to The Dalles where Conrad worked at 
the tie plant.
     She was a homemaker who enjoyed her family, gardening, sewing and cooking.
     Mrs. Rust is survived by her daughters, Nelda Williams and husband, 
Robert; and Velda Alford and husband, Thomas, all of The Dalles; six 
grandchildren:  John Williams, Kent; Connie Ackerman and Lisa Rodarte, 
Portland; Kenneth Alford, Hermiston; Ted Alford, Ukiah; and Larna Neuberger, 
Kennewick; ten great-grandchildren; two brothers:  Benny W. Payne, The Dalles, 
and Frank Payne, Yuma, Ariz.; three sisters:  Gladys Fulkerson, The Dalles; 
Betty Emerson, Yuma; and Doris Twiggs, Spokane; and numerous nieces and 
nephews.
     She was preceded in death by her husbnd, Conrad, in March 1982; her 
brother, Alfred; sisters, Leona Hale and Irene Belshe; and four infant 
siblings.
     Private cremation will be followed by a memorial service at 1 p.m. 
Saturday, March 2, at Parklawn Cemetery.
     Memorials:  Columbia Basin Nursing Home Fund in care of Spencer, Libby & 
Powell Funeral Home, 1100 Kelly Ave., The Dalles.
