Wakley iwakley@msn.com June 2, 2006, 1:11 am The Dalles Chronicle, April 11, 2006 Hattie Kathryn Root, 92, a resident of The Dalles, died at a local hospital Thursday, April 6, 2006. She was born Aug. 17, 1913 in Riverton, Neb., the fourth of eight children to Pete and Mary Katherine (Goebel) Iverson. In 1936, due to the Depression, she left her home in Nebraska, and along with her sister, Elsie, and brother, Bill, drove to Oregon to join brothers Don and Harlan, who were working in the Tygh Valley area. She lived on Tygh Ridge with the Hendricks family, working as an assistant to her dear friend Mildred. She later settled in Mosier and began working in a restaurant, where she eventually met her husband, Howard. They were married July 4, 1940. They purchased a cherry orchard from Howard’s father, which they operated together until Howard’s death in 1969. Following his death, Hattie moved to Netarts, to the home they had purchased together in anticipation of their retirement. She lived there until 1980, when she returned to The Dalles to be near her family. Hattie loved ceramics and painting, and was a long-time active member of the Home Extension Organization. She was an avid gardener, grafting cherry trees before it was popular, and teaching nieces and nephews how to do the same. She continued to love flowers, and was excitedly waiting to plant some with great-great niece Alexiss this spring. She is survived by her son, Gail Root, of Tucson, Ariz.; one grandson, Mark Root of Bend; by two brothers, Bernard and his wife Lillian Iverson and Merlyn and his wife Marge Iverson, both of Wamic, and by numerous nieces and nephews. Viewing visitation will be held on Thursday, April 13, 2006 from 9 a.m. to noon at Spencer, Libby and Powell Funeral Home. Funeral service will be held Thursday, April 13 at 2 p.m. with Asa Jenson officiating at Spencer, Libby and Powell Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will follow at the Mosier Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, Pacific Mountain Affiliate, 710 2nd Ave., Suite 900, Seattle, WA, 98104.
