Wakley iwakley@msn.com December 28, 2006, 6:36 pm The Dalles Chronicle, July 2, 2006 Jack Edwin Robertson, 75, died June 27, 2006 at the Oregon Veterans Home in The Dalles. He was born in The Dalles to Vernie (Dick) and Hazel (Calkins) Robertson, the second of three children on May 31, 1931. He was raised in The Dalles and, after attending public school, graduated from The Dalles High School in 1950. After graduation he enlisted in the US Navy in December of 1950 and served through October, 1954. After being honorably discharged from the Navy, he worked on the construction of The Dalles Dam between 1954 and 55. He started his career in law enforcement with The Dalles City Police in 1956 extending through 1963, subsequently transitioning to the Wasco County Sheriff’s Department where he retired as Chief Deputy in 1986. Concurrently, since high school graduation, he worked with Herbert Dohm (Donna Dohm’s father) in an apprenticeship carpentry program, eventually obtaining journeyman status. He worked on many construction projects and built many homes in The Dalles and surrounding community via several independent contractors including Mid State Construction and Aaron Hageman. He had many hobbies and interests, but none so captivating as his interest in aviation. He obtained his private pilot license in 1959 and shortly thereafter purchased a 1939 Piper Cub, which he owned and operated for more than 35 years. He loved spending time with his family and grandchildren. He also enjoyed camping, hunting, fishing and photography. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Donna (Dohm) Robertson; his daughter Julie and Peter Nicholson, Vancouver; sons Jay Robertson, Vancouver; Jon and Amy Robertson and grandchildren Jonathan, Amanda, Ashley and Abigail, The Dalles; his brother Richard and wife Pauline Robertson, The Dalles; as well as several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister Lylas Blair and her husband Dale. Graveside services will be held at the IOOF Cemetery in The Dalles on July 17, at 10 a.m. A celebration of life service will follow at the First Christian Church at 11 a.m. located at Eighth and Court streets in The Dalles. Donations can be made to the following charities, if desired, in lieu of flower arrangements: Oregon Veterans Home, First Christian Church or American Stroke Association. Spencer, Libby and Powell Funeral Home in care of arrangements.
