Wakley iwakley@msn.com December 30, 2006, 1:36 pm The Dalles Chronicle, August 15, 2006 John Joseph Roberts, 73, of Dufur, Ore. died at his home on Wednesday, Aug. 9, 2006. He was born in Miramonte Park, CA on Feb. 3, 1933 the third of five children to Harry Rex and Gladys Agatha (Keene) Roberts. While attending Citrus Union High School in Azusa, Calif., he joined the U.S. Air force and was stationed in Puerto Rico for four years. Shortly after his honorable discharge he met and married Patricia Ann Grimmesey on April 25, 1954. In January of 1955 he re-enlisted in the Air Force and moved to Spokane, Wash., followed by a year in Korea, then to Spokane, Wash. and Sacramento, Calif., and finally to Portland where he was stationed at an air base. He was honorably discharged and later worked for Freightliner Corp. prior to his employment by the US Postal Service in Hood River in March of 1973. He was promoted to Postmaster in Wolf Cree, then was postmaster in Canyonville from December 1981 until his retirement in June 1990 when he moved to Takuya, Wash. After his stroke in June 1996 he moved to Dufur, in 1998. John was an avid golfer and enjoyed hunting and fishing. He loved a campfire and enjoyed people. He is survived by his wife of fifty-two years, Pat, of Dufur; his sisters, Helen Chatigny and her husband James of Grass Valley, Calif. and Julia Roberts of Seattle, Wash.; sisters-in-law, Alice O’Neil and her husband Joseph of Crooked River, and Shirley Roberts of Gresham; his cousin, Ruth Caekaert of Dallas, Texas and numerous other family and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Mildred Coombs and his brother, George Roberts. A memorial mass will be held Saturday, Aug. 19, 2006 at 11 a.m. at St. Alphonsus Catholic Church, on the corner of Church St. and 2nd in Dufur, with Spencer, Libby and Powell Funeral Home in care of arrangements. A reception will follow at the Methodist Hall on 2nd and Akins St. in Dufur. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Alphonsus Church, PO Box 395, Dufur, 97021 or to a charity of choice.
