Wakley iwakley@msn.com December 31, 2006, 1:07 pm The Dalles Chronicle, September 11, 2006 Leslie McCaw Ritchey, 87, died Sept. 5 at the home of his daughter in Sisters. He was born Dec. 19, 1918 in Des Moines, Iowa, the oldest child of Charles and Mary Still Ritchey. Knowing that World War II was coming, he joined the Navy to fulfill a lifelong dream of flying. He became a flight instructor at Pensacola, Fla., eventually earning the rank of captain in the Marine Corps. After the war, he bought an Indian motorcycle and toured the country. He stopped in the upper Hood River valley, found temporary work picking apples, and stayed for four years. He returned to Iowa to finish his last year at Drake University. There, he married Leona Herbst. In 1953, they returned to Parkdale with their infant daughter. He was hired by Hines Lumber Company, Dee, to work in the lab. During his career, he held many different positions at the hardboard plant, retiring in 1981. He developed a passion for archaeology and was active in the Oregon Archaeological Society, Mid-Columbia Archaeological Society as well as participating in many university excavations. He is survived by his children, Jean and her husband Paul Stark, Sisters; Connie Ritchey and Jim Ritchey, both of Hawaii; Brian Ritchey, Iowa; and grandsons, Justin Swope, Jonathan, Jim, Ian and Jaxon Stark. The family invites all to Parkdale Grange on Saturday, Sept. 23 from 2 to 4 p.m. for pie, coffee, punch, and reminiscing.
