Wakley iwakley@msn.com April 17, 2006, 1:43 am The Dalles Chronicle, January 13, 2006 Rose Ellen Rietmann, 76. a resident of Condon, died at her home Jan. 7, 2006, of a rare blood disorder known as polycythemia. She was born in Payette, Idaho on Sept. 3, 1929 and was raised on a farm near Plymouth. Her parents, Walter and Genevieve Schmid, named her after her grandmothers, Rosa Heilemann Schmid and Ellen Evalena Johnson Jones. She graduated from Fruitland High School in 1947 and received her bachelor’s degree in home economics from the University of Idaho in 1951 where she was a member of the Vandaleers, the college’s traveling choral group and also a member of the Spurs, a sophomore service organization for women. She taught high school economics in Baker, then served as the home economist for the Oregon Wheat Growers League, based in Pendleton. She got acquainted with her husband-to-be, Van Rietmann, when he was chairman of the OWGL, Wheat Disposal and Transportation Committee. They were married in Fruitland, Idaho in 1955 and they lived on the family farm west of Condon where they raised their two children, Marie and Tom. As an accomplished vocalist, she lent her talents to her communities starting when she was in high school. In Condon she served as vocalist for many weddings and funerals. She was always active in the Condon United Church of Christ, providing music and other leadership as needed. She was a member of the Reading Club for 44 years. She went to the hospital in The Dalles Dec. 16 and returned home Jan. 5 with care from Hospice of the Gorge. Survivors include her daughter, Marie, Washington, D.C.; son, Tom, daughter-in-law Katie Cook and grandchildren Jacob, Benjamin and Annika, Condon; brother, Joe and sister Freda, New Plymouth, and their families. She was preceded in death by her parents, and her husband, who died in a farm accident on Aug. 7, 2005. There will be a memorial service in celebration of her life at 4 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 14 at United Church of Christ in Condon, followed by a catered meal. Memorials may be made to the United Church of Christ Endowment and Memorial Fund, P.O. Box 223, Condon, OR 97823 or a charity of choice. Support of a local Red Cross blood drive would be appreciated as well.
