She was born Sept. 1, 1910, in Perkinstown, Wis., the only child to George A. and Elizabeth K. (Gilcher) Goodwin. Her family journeyed west and settled in Hood River where she graduated from high school. She was married to Ernest H. Rhodes and they lived in The Dalles for many years. They divorced in later years. She worked at Wink’s Auction Yard, clerking for 13 years; then was a secretary for Chenowith Irrigation Co-op for 13 years and later worked at the Congregational Church office for 10 years. She was a longtime member of the United Church of Christ Congregational; a more than 50-year member and a past noble grand of Azalea Rebekah Lodge; member and past master of Chenowith Grange, member of state and national grange for more than 50 years. She was a past member of the Pythian Sisters, Fort Dalles Temple #5; Fort Dalles Riders, charter member of Mid Columbia Senior Center; volunteer for the American Red Cross for over 25 years and secretary for many groups. She loved to garden, read and loved animals with a special fondness for horses and cats. As her health declined she came to live at Evergreen The Dalles and she loved all the outings, whether to the store or to see a parade. She is survived by her son, Russel and his wife, Donna Rhodes, The Dalles; her granddaughter, Victoria Popper and her husband, Seth, and their children, Alexus and Aaron. Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m., Thursday, Dec. 16, at Evergreen The Dalles Health Care Center with Asa Jenson officiating. Private entombment will be held at Idlewild Cemetery in Hood River with Smith Callaway Chapel in care of arrangements. Remembrances suggested by her family include a visit to someone in a nursing home or a donation to Home At Last Animal Friends, P.O. Box 390, The Dalles, OR 97058.
