He was born Feb. 28, 1926, in Chicago, the younger of two children to Martin F. and Margaret M. (McGeever) Quillinan. He grew up in Chicago and graduated from Calumet High School. He graduated from the University of Illinois in Champaign-Urbana with his bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering and then enlisted in the Navy. He was in the Navy for seven and a half years, serving during the Korean Conflict and was discharged as a lieutenant. After his discharge, he worked for the US Army Corps of Engineers for 12 years and then worked for about 20 years in international engineering consulting. Internationally, he worked in Thailand, South East Asia, Ethiopia, Africa, Central and South America building roads, airports, bridges and other societal infrastructure. He also taught civil engineering technology at Portland Community College for three years. In 1983, he became the chief highway engineer for the Bureau of Indian Affairs in Northern Arizona on the Navajo Indian Reservation, retiring in 1988. He was active with senior service programs in Delta, Colo., and enjoyed planting trees, gardening and working in his workshop. He is survived by four children, Kasia Quillinan and her husband, David Engen, Salem; William Quillinan, San Pedro, Calif.; Nicole Quillinan, Asheville, N.C.; Kevin and his wife, Cyporette Quillinan, Oakland, Calif.; three grandchildren, Alan Quillinan, Sacramento, Calif.; Moshe and John Quillinan, both of Oakland; his sister, Joan Clark, McHenry, Ill.; five step- children, Joe, Alex, Ron, Laura and Audrey; two former spouses, Carol Quillinan, Bradenton, Fla., and Aliceann Sellers, Ariz. Private family services will be held at a later date. Private cremation was held at The Dalles Win-quatt Crematory with Smith Callaway Chapel in care of arrangements. Memorials may be made to Oregon Veterans’ Home, 700 Veterans’ Drive, The Dalles, OR 97058.
