He was born to Archie Vernon and Ila (Kenyon) Pounds, Sept. 28, 1935, in Portland. He was raised in different places throughout Oregon as his family moved, attending schools in Sandy, Klamath Falls and Welches. He attended Wasco Union High School in Maupin after moving to Wamic and Tygh Valley in 1951. In 1953 at the age of 17 he joined the U.S. Navy and set his goals. On Sept. 29, 1956, he married Barbara Jean Whitecotton in Goldendale. They spent his military career in various places while he was stationed on several different destroyers, and an aircraft carrier. He was also a recruiting officer in Bend. They also lived in Pearl City, Hawaii, for 5 ½ years, where he retired from the Navy in 1972 as a boiler technician master chief. He was awarded many medals, including the Navy Achievement Medal, and also wore gold on his sleeve and insignia, indicating good conduct for each four-year period represented. He also served in Korea and Vietnam. In 1972 he moved his family to The Dalles, where he raised his children. He worked at the Goldendale aluminum plant where he was a general foreman, retiring in 1986. He and his wife then moved to Pine Hollow near Wamic, where he achieved much in the Pine Hollow Fire Dept. as well as becoming a medical responder for many years. He loved people and was always there to give any help he could until he became ill. He enjoyed his family, traveling with his wife in their RV and going across country. He was a member of the Tygh Valley United Methodist Church. He is survived by his wife, Barbara J. Pounds, of Pine Hollow; his daughter, Kathern I. Dousay, The Dalles; his sons, Daniel D. Pounds of The Dalles, and Vernon Pounds of Pine Hollow, and his former daughter-in-law Sally Clair of The Dalles. Also surviving are grandchildren Rebecca and Stephanie Dousay, Danyell Garcia, Michon and Joshua Wilson, Dennis Pounds and Anthony Campbell all of The Dalles, and eight great-grandchildren; his sister, Leota Ownbey of Sandy; his brother in-law, Jim Whitecotton of Dufur; numerous nieces and nephews, and his dog Jake. He was preceded in death by his parents and by sisters Imogene Fischer, Shirley and Dorothy Pounds. Memorial services will at 1 p.m. on Saturday, July 24, at the United Methodist Church in Tygh Valley, Pastor Jerry Holland presiding. A potluck gathering will follow. Memorial contributions may be made to the United Methodist Church of Tygh Valley, or to the American Cancer Society for reseach on mesothelioma. Arrangements are by Columbia Cremation & Burial.
