She was born Nov. 2, 1921, in Seattle, the oldest child of Fred Harold and Nellie Marie (George) Cornett. She grew up during the Great Depression and her parents lacked the financial resources to raise their many children, so they were forced to place all six in a Kansas orphanage. As a result, she had to drop out of school in the eighth grade and became a photographer’s assistant in Detroit, Mich., often posing for “glamour shots” for her employer’s portrait portfolio. She went on to briefly live in Kansas and Oklahoma before finally returning to the West Coast. Though planning to relocate to California, she changed her mind and ended her journey in The Dalles, where she met and eventually married Carl Melvin “Mel” Anderson, a Union Pacific Railroad employee and cherry orchardist with deep roots in The Dalles area. His Irish and Swedish grandparents and great-grandparents all homesteaded near the current ghost town of Kingsley (close to Dufur), where they ranched cattle and farmed wheat. While in The Dalles, she worked several years as a hairdresser and Merle Norman cosmetician before becoming a popular waitress at The Recreation Cafe. She also helped run the Anderson family’s cherry orchard on Orchard Street. Much later in life, She undertook a final career as a bookkeeper before retiring in her mid-60’s to enjoy her special talent for gardening. She is survived by her daughter Blaine “Nancy” Anderson and her son-in- law Mark Hennigh, both of Moraga, Calif.; two granddaughters, Anna Anderson Hennigh and Jillian Anderson Hennigh, also both of Moraga; her brother, Robert Levit, of Longview, Wash.; her nieces, Barbara, Cheri and Marie; her nephews, “Butch” and David; her cousin by marriage, Leota Gibb, Seattle, and her dear and devoted friend, Betty LaDouceur, The Dalles. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Mel Anderson and her second husband, David “Bud” Pierce, as well as her parents and brothers Orvin, Donald, LeRoy and Ralph Levit. At her request, no public services will be held. Private cremation was held at The Dalles Win-quatt Crematory with Spencer, Libby and Powell Funeral Home in care of arrangements. Private inurnment will be held at The Dalles Odd Fellows Cemetery Mausoleum. Memorials may be made to Hospice of The Gorge, 751 Myrtle Street, The Dalles, OR 97058.
