     Charles “Chuck” Henry Pierce, 74, a resident of Maupin, died at the local 
hospital Monday, Dec. 1, 2003.
     He was born June 23, 1929 in Boise, Idaho, the older of two children and 
was raised in Boise and Oregon City. He then entered the U.S. Army serving as 
a paratrooper during the Korean Conflict. He returned to Portland and attended 
a trade school program for small engine repair then lived in the Boise area 
until 1968, moved to the St. John’s area in Portland and then to Pine Grove in 
the late 90’s.
     He enjoyed “Star Trek” movies, wood working and the Oregon Coast. 
He is survived by his fiancee, Lee VanValkenberg, Pine Grove; six children, 
Roberta and her husband, James Graham Sr., Troutdale; Chester and his wife, 
Rose Pierce, Beaverton; Charlotte and her husband, Kenneth Kahaloa, Portland; 
Patrick Pierce, Maupin; Rose Graham, Portland, and Sara and her husband, Scott 
Mitchell, Pacific City; 17 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. He was 
preceded in death by his wife, Alice Marie Shafer on Dec. 15, 1992 and his 
son, Franklin Pierce in 1999.
     Private gathering of family and friends will be held at Slim’s Restaurant 
& Lounge on North Lombard in Portland. Private cremation was held at The 
Dalles Win-quatt Crematory with interment of cremains at Willamette National 
Cemetery. Smith Callaway Chapel is in care of arrangements.
     Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 2120 First Ave. N, 
Seattle, WA 98109
