Wakley iwakley@msn.com April 21, 2006, 2:30 pm The Dalles Chronicle, March 29, 2006 Charles Leroy Phillips, 85, a lifelong resident of The Dalles, died at a local hospital on Thursday, March 23, 2006. He was born Nov. 13, 1920, in The Dalles, the only child to Charles Leroy and Josie Catherine (Kuck) Phillips. He grew up and graduated from high school in The Dalles. Upon graduation, he worked as a bookkeeper at The Dalles Cherry Growers for about a year, then went to work for Union Pacific Railroad as a telegrapher clerk, agent and tower operator, retiring in 1981, after 40 years of service. He and his wife, Hazel (Miller) Phillips, owned and operated Hazel Phillips Travel, which they sold in 1982. He served in the U.S. Army in World War II, landing in New Guinea then going to Luzon Philippines Islands. After Japan surrendered, he was sent to Korea as part of the occupation troops, and served as chief dispatcher for the Army-run Korean Railroad until being honorably discharged as a tech. sergeant. He was a member of Emmanuel Baptist Church and loved to hunt and fish. He played trombone in the high school band and The Dalles City Band. He also learned to play the organ and enjoyed playing at the beginning of each morning and evening service. After World War II, he learned to fly full-sized single engine aircraft. He built and flew radio controlled helicopters, and also was a HAM radio operator for many years, with the call letters W7HRG. He is survived by his wife, Hazel Phillips, whom he married Sept. 16, 1944; his daughter, Roberta Anderson, Aumsville; son-in-law, Marvin Anderson; grandchildren, Tony, Josh, Alisa and Tim; great-grandchildren, Acea, Adam, Austin, Cole, and Ronnilynn. Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, April 1, at The Dalles Emmanuel Baptist Church, 2819 W. 10th Street, with Pastor Tim Foster officiating. Private cremation was held at The Dalles Win-quatt Crematory with Spencer, Libby & Powell Funeral Home, in care of arrangements.
