He was born June 9, 1920, in Richfield, Idaho, the youngest of five children to Samuel Nels and Ruth (Roberts) Petersen. He grew up on the family farm in Richfield and graduated from The Dalles High School in 1938. After high school, he worked at Nielsen’s Cherry Orchards and then for the Union Pacific Railroad. He served in the U.S. Army as a medic in Europe during World War II. Upon returning from the service, he continued his work with the Union Pacific Railroad in The Dalles. He was a member of the Elks Lodge, American Legion and enjoyed spending time with his friends, the outdoors, hunting, fishing and gardening (especially his tomatoes). He also was an avid reader and enjoyed crossword puzzles. He is survived by his daughters, Gay and her husband, Delno Hodgman, Piedmont, S.D.; Pam and her husband, Mark Griffith, The Dalles; six step- children, JoAnne Jolliffe, Boise, Idaho; Juanita Leibbrandt, Portland; Bonnie Osborne, Depoe Bay; Suny Simon, Hood River; Stephen Ganders, Wamic; and Dena Gay Gist, Philomath; 18 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; sisters Ruth Myers, Nampa, Idaho; and Elsie Plonski, Payson, Ariz.; his nephew, Mike Berg, San Francisco; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Wilma Petersen, whom he married Nov. 29, 1975, in White Salmon, Wash.; his brother, Ed and his sister, Edna. Funeral services will be held at Spencer, Libby and Powell Funeral Home at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 5, with Asa Jenson officiating. Interment will follow at 18th Street Odd Fellows Cemetery on Cherry Heights Road. Memorial contributions may be made to: Home at Last, Animal Friends, PO Box 390, The Dalles, OR 97058.
