Surnames: Peters, Anderson, Wilson, Sheridan, Estlund, Vranizan, Coats, West Richard Ellsworth Peters, 87, a resident of The Dalles, died Thursday, March 27, 2003 at his home. He was born August 29, 1915, in Pendleton (Oregon), the only child of Frederick Ellsworth and Ida Marie (Anderson) Peters. He grew up there, graduating from Pendleton High School in 1933. He moved to Portland and became a boilermaker's apprentice for the Union Pacific Railroad. He married Edna E. Wilson in 1936 and the couple moved to Port Orchard, Washington where he worked as a welder at the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard in Bremerton (Washington). They later moved to Portland where they resided for a number of years before moving to The Dalles in 1957 when he accepted a position with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers at The Dalles Dam. An enthusiastic volunteer and active in his community, he was a 50-years member of Wasco Lodge 15, A.F. & A.M., as well as a life member of The Dalles Chapter 6 Royal Arch Masons, Columbia Commandery of Knights Templar, and Mid-Columbia Shrine Club, Al Kader Shrine. As a member of the York Rite Masonic bodies he worked for many years on the Easter Sunrise Services at Pulpit Rock. He was an active member of The Dalles Kiwanis Club for several decades, serving hundreds of hours with the preparation and serving of the annual steak feed at Sorosis Park, bell-ringing during the Christmas season for the Salvation Army, and working tirelessly to promote membership in Kiwanis International. He was a Master Gardener and was featured in Sunset Magazine for his tomato-growing expertise. He taught vocational welding classes for over 40 years in extension classes throughout several surrounding counties. He was an avid outdoorsman. He is survived by his wife Edna, The Dalles; and his children and their families; sons Richard A. Peters, Auburn, Washington; and Paul E. Peters, Portland; daughters Mary Jane Sheridan, Long Island, New York; and Patricia Estlund, Salem (Oregon). Also surviving are grandchildren Richard and Byron Peters, Michelle Vranizan, Jim Coats, Bjorn Estlund, and Anne West, as well as seven great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held Saturday, April 5, at 11 a.m. at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in The Dalles. The Reverend Tracy Browning will preside, and Masonic honors will be rendered by members of Wasco Lodge 15, A.F. & A.M. Private inurnment ceremonies will be held at I.O.O.F. Cemetery for the family.
