Wakley iwakley@msn.com April 24, 2006, 12:04 am The Dalles Daily Chronicle, February 7, 1996 Clair A. Penners, 79, a life long resident of The Dalles died at his home on Feb. 5, 1996. He was born April 12, 1916 to Michael and Theresa Penners. He attended schools here and graduated from The Dalles High School in 1934. He began his career with U.S. Bank in 1935 as a teller. He retired after 42 years of service in 1978 and at the time of his retirement was bank manager. He was a P-38 pilot in World War II with the 55th Fighter Group and flew 50 missions in the European theater until he was shot down and captured as a prisoner of war in Germany. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, Air Medal and Oak Leaf Cluster, campaign ribbons and the Purple Heart. He won the Man of the Year award in 1964 and was a captain in the volunteer fire department for more than 29 years. He was a member of the Lions Club and past president of the Chamber of Commerce, was treasurer for the March of Dimes for more than 14 years, was a member of the board for the Salvation Army, Tuberculosis and Health Association, was past chairman of the Red Cross Blood Drive and the St. Mary's and high school PTA groups. He was a past officer and member of the BPOE Elks Chorus, past president member of The Dalles Country Club and was a member of the 55th Fighter group Alumni Association. He was also a facilitator in the financing of Mid-Columbia Medical Center. Survivors include his wife, Ellen (Clair) Penners; three children, Marilyn Flory, The Dalles; Mike Penners and his wife, Joannie, Vancouver; Mark Penners and his wife, Karen, Gresham; seven grandchildren; Wendy and Colleen Flory, Peter, Gretchen and Stephanie Gardner, Melissa and Tyler Penners; a sister, Geraldine Kidd and her husband, Stewart, Portland; nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be Friday at 1 p.m. at St. Peter Catholic Church. Committal will follow at St. Peter Cemetery. Memorials have been suggested to the Lions Eye Program, Elks Big Brother, KCI Institute or charities of the donors choice sent in care of Smith Callaway Chapel.
