Wakley iwakley@msn.com December 26, 2006, 5:32 pm The Dalles Weekly Reminder, February 2, 1984 Matt Adam Payne, 88, a resident of the Mid-Columbia area since 1925, died Monday at the Veterans Hospital in Vancouver, Wash. He was born Oct. 26, 1895 at London, Ky. Mr. Payne was a member of The Dalles American Legion, and Barracks 145, World War I Veterans. For many years, he was active in the color guards for military funerals. Surviving are his wife of 49 years, Vera, The Dalles; a son, William G. Payne; a stepson, Jess W. Moore, Dundee; a stepdaughter, Carol Lobitz, Wayazeta, Minn.; two brothers, Victor Payne, Portland, and Tobe Payne, The Dalles; three grandchildren, five step-grandchildren, and six great- grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services are Friday at 11 a.m. at Smith Callaway Chapel, with Pastors Robert Letcher and Charles Liu officiating. Military rites will follow at Parklawn Memorial Gardens under the auspices of The Dalles Area veterans organizations. Viewing is today (Thursday) until 7 p.m. The family has suggested contributions to the American Cancer Society.
