Wakley iwakley@msn.com June 1, 2006, 4:12 pm The Dalles Chronicle, April 9, 2006 Benny Walter Payne, 90, of The Dalles, died Thursday, April 6, 2006, at a local hospital. He was born, the eighth of thirteen children, to Benjamin Franklin Payne and Minnie Mae (Ashley) Payne, in Grass Valley on June 8, 1915. He grew up in Grass Valley, and graduated from Grass Valley High School in 1935. He then joined the Army, and served in World War II, and received the Bronze Star, and a Purple Heart. He returned to Grass Valley, and owned and operated a wheat farm. He married Laverne (Cross) Payne in Goldendale, Wash., in 1947. He moved to The Dalles in 1978. He was a member of The American Legion, and the Sherman County Historical Society. He enjoyed farming, traveling, hunting, fishing on the Deschutes River, playing any type of card games, and cribbage. He is survived by his two sisters, Gladys Fulkerson of The Dalles and Doris Twiggs of Spokane; brother Frank Payne of Florence; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife. A viewing-visitation will be held from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Monday, April 10, 2006, at Spencer Libby, and Powell Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held at Spencer, Libby, and Powell Funeral Home on Tuesday, April 11, 2006, at 11 a.m., with graveside services immediately following at the IOOF ThreeMile Cemetery, with Spencer, Libby, and Powell Funeral Home in care of arrangements. Donations in his memory may be made to the Sherman County Historical Society, 200 Dewey Street, Moro, Oregon 97039.
