The Dalles Chronicle, May 20, 2005
     Ruth S. Payne, 95, a former resident of The Dalles, died at a care 
facility in Des Moines, Wash., on Wednesday, May 11, 2005.
     She was born on July 18, 1909 in The Dalles, the oldest of three children 
to George P. and Myrtle D. (Cathcart) Starr. She was raised in The Dalles and 
graduated from The Dalles High School.
     Ruth married Philip Ryan, of The Dalles. 
     They lived in The Dalles, moved to California and then back to The Dalles.
Philip preceded her in death and she was remarried to Culver S. Payne. 
     Ruth worked for “Brady’s” grocery store and Safeway in The Dalles, 
retiring in the 1970’s.
     She enjoyed spending time with her family, traveling, knitting, and 
gardening.
     Ruth is survived by her daughter, Colleen Ryan Zimnisky and son-in-law 
Larry Zimnisky, Kent, Wash.; grandchildren, Philis and her husband, Gerry 
Fernandez, Kent; Jake and his wife Lisa Zimnisky, Auburn, Wash.; Tim and his 
wife Michelle Zimnisky, Gig Harbor, Wash.; six great-grandchildren; two 
brothers, George Starr, The Dalles; Bill Starr, Klamath Falls; her son-in-law 
Wilbur Smith, Ketchikan, Alaska. 
     She was preceded in death by both of her husbands and her daughter, 
Philis Starr Smith.
     Private family memorial services will be held at St. Peter’s Catholic 
Cemetery at a later date. Smith Callaway Chapel is in care of arrangements.
     Memorial contributions may be made to the Multiple Sclerosis Society, 
1650 NW Naito PKWY, #190, Portland, OR 97209.
