He was born Sept. 14, 1921, in Bucyrus, N.D., the third of seven children to Harry L. and Gladys (Larsen) Otos. He was raised in Bucyrus and Hettinger, N.D., graduating from high school in Hettinger in 1939. He served four years in the U.S. Navy during WWII, marrying Roberta "Bobbie" Ruth Kelly on Jan. 16, 1942, in Wilmar, Minn. They moved to The Dalles in 1946 and soon after started and operated The Dalles Reminder, a weekly shopping and advertising paper, now known as The Dalles Reminder Shopper. In 1959, they moved to Monument and ranched for two years. After a few years in the Eugene area, they resumed control of The Dalles Reminder, and moved back to The Dalles, selling the Reminder in the mid-1970s. Among later enterprises, he and his wife obtained their real estate and brokerage licenses, and he continued his realty business until his death. He built and owned the airplane hangers at The Dalles Airport until the mid- 1990s. He was a member of St. Peter's Catholic Church, The Dalles Elks, Eagles, Moose Lodges and The Dalles American Legion. He enjoyed golfing, fishing, camping and flying his own airplane. He is survived by Bobbie Otos, his wife of 62 years, of The Dalles; eight children, Susan Wilkins, Claremont, Calif.; Sally Otos, New York, N.Y.; James Otos and his wife, Debra Dunn, Powder Springs, Ga.; David Otos, Portland; Louis Otos and his wife, Betty, Cartersville, Ga.; Rebecca Finneran and her husband, Brian, Portland; Daniel Otos, The Dalles and Steven Otos and his wife, Kathryn, Lake Oswego; eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; three brothers, Bill Otos and his wife, Maurine, Milwaukie; Larry Otos and his wife, Susan, Suquamish, Wash.; Tom Otos and his wife, Sandra, Ridgefield, Wash. He was preceded in death by one son, Richard, one daughter, Margaret, one sister, Grayce Bravos, and two brothers, Roger and Gordon. Mass of Christian burial will be held at St. Peter's Catholic Church on Saturday, May 1, 2004 at 10 a.m., with Rev. Todd Unger as celebrant. Interment will follow at St. Peter's Catholic Cemetery with Spencer, Libby and Powell Funeral Home in care of arrangements.
