Wakley iwakley@msn.com April 16, 2006, 11:35 am The Dalles Chronicle, October 14, 2005 Florence May Barnum Oneal, whose roots were in the Columbia Gorge, died Tuesday, Oct. 11, 2005, after a long battle with illness. She was born in Sherman County on July 8, 1932 to Josephine and Theodore Barnum. She grew up in Eastern Oregon, married and had seven children and moved around for many years before returning home to her gorge roots in November 1973. She was an accomplished pianist and composer, writing many original works. She sang with her church for many years, as well as at weddings and funerals. She was very active in her community. While she was able, she volunteered many hours to the senior center and bookmobile. She is survived by her mother Josephine Gentry; sister Wilma Gayle; children Gary Carpenter, Karen Castro, Mike Cain, James Cain, Mary Cain, and Daniel Cain; 10 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and foster children. A private family service will be held. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her name to the American Heart Association or the American Diabetes Association. Gardner Funeral Home’s Columbia River Crematory was in care of arrangements.
