Wakley iwakley@msn.com December 28, 2006, 7:54 pm The Dalles Chronicle, July 24, 2006 Floyd D. O’Brien, 84, died from cancer July 23, 2006, at his home in Salem with family at his side. He was born Feb. 19, 1922, in Dufur to Edith Evelyn (Moore) and Richard Ferris O’Brien. He graduated from Dufur High School in 1940. While still in school, he worked for Heislers Market in Dufur and learned to cut meat. In 1941, he moved to Springfield, where he worked as a meat cutter for Irish & Murphy. In August 1941, he joined the U.S. Army where he served in the Pacific in General MacArthur’s Headquarters Company. He was discharged in October 1945 as a technical sergeant, receiving the Asiatic-Pacific Service Medal, the Good Conduct Medal, and the Philippines Liberation Medal with one Bronze Service Star. After discharge, he went back to Irish & Murphy. It was there he met Helene Andersen Carter and they were married on Dec. 29, 1947. At the time, she had a daughter, Barbara Carter, who remained his only child. He continued in the meat industry until 1965, then worked for the Fuller Brush Company until 2001. The couple moved to Salem in November 1967 and became involved with the Thor Lodge of Sons of Norway, where Floyd served a term as president. On May 3, 1990, Helena died after a long illness. He married Leslie Ann Reseland in Dallas on Oct. 20, 1990. The couple shared travels, dancing, music and being with friends. Since his stroke in 2001, she gave him care and tenderness. Oregon Ducks football was his great passion and he delighted in following them to postseason bowl games, having had season tickets for 50-plus years. He is survived by his wife, Leslie; daughter, Barbara Brown Richey and son-in-law Ken; grandson, Jason C. Brown (Samantha Faircloth); granddaughter Maria Jackson (Thom); and great-grandchildren, Quinn, Jillian and Kelly Jackson; his sister, Carol Mead and her husband, Mell; stepchildren, Nancy Crass (Kevin), Bill Reseland; step-grandchildren, Luke McAllister (Andrea), Melanie Taylor and Tiffany Allen (Jason), Natasha Christensen (Jason) and Lacey Crass; five step-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews and great-nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife, brothers Claude, John, Francis, and Ferris O’Brien, and his sister Hazel O’Brien Studenicka. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m., Wednesday, July 26, at Barrick Funeral Home. Memorial services will be Thursday, July 27, at 2 p.m. at Salem First Christian Church. Private interment will be at Willamette National Cemetery, Portland.
