Wakley iwakley@msn.com December 30, 2006, 3:49 pm The Dalles Chronicle, August 22, 2006 Charlie Norris, 61, a local firefighter for some 34 years, and former fire marshal, died Friday evening, Aug. 18, 2006 at his home in The Dalles. He was the fire marshal for Mid-Columbia Fire & Rescue District for the eight years before his retirement in 2000, and was instrumental in establishing the Mid-Columbia Fire Protection Cooperative. He joined The Dalles Fire Department in 1966. He was born Charles “Charlie” Estes Norris in Walla Walla, Wash., on April 18, 1945, the youngest of three children to Vernon Eugene and Edna A. (Gooding) Norris. He grew up in Hermiston, graduating from Hermiston High School in 1963. He attended Eastern Washington University in Cheney, Wash., and the National Fire Academy in Washington D.C. He married Gloria Sharon Anderson in Boise, ID on Feb. 8, 1975. He worked for Union Pacific Railroad as a young man out of college and part-time during off duty hours with Carolyn’s Furniture and The Dalles Liquor Store. After retiring as the Mid Columbia Fire Marshal, he and his wife started Norris Arts (crafting and selling intarsia). They have lived in The Dalles for the past 40 years. He was a member of the Episcopal Church, Lions Club, and Fraternal Order of Eagles Chapter, Wasco County Fire Prevention Co-Op, past member of the Local 1308 Firefighter Union, OFIA and OFEA. He enjoyed watercolors, oil painting, miniatures, photography, wood crafting, reading, collecting firefighter memorabilia and camp hosting as a volunteer at Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park. He is survived by his wife Sharon Norris, The Dalles; three children, Marci and her husband Todd Claunch, Vancouver, Wash.; Bobbi and her husband Jeff Beck, Philomath; Tina and her husband Jim Warner, Kennewick, Wash.; and Alan and his wife Sheri Morgan, Clinton, Okla.; 12 grandchildren, Brittany, Bailey, Dalley, Roper, Ashley, Breanna, Noah, Andria, Lea, Nicole, Sherinda and Jared; one great-grandchild, Alexi; two sisters, Peggy and her husband Ted Ayers, Boise; and Roberta and her husband Walt Lafevre, Monroe, Utah. He was preceded in death by his parents. Memorial service will be held on Wednesday, Aug. 23, at 11 a.m. at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church with Spencer, Libby and Powell Funeral Home in care of arrangements. Private cremation held at The Dalles Win-Quatt Crematory. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, 1425 N.E. Irving #100, Portland, OR 97232-4201.
