He was born Sept. 8, 1918 in Centerville to William and Jetta Walman Niva. He graduated from Centerville High School. He married Hazel Mae Snow of Gilliam, W.V. in 1943 in Wilmington, Del. He served in the U.S. Navy in World War II in the Philippines as a turret mechanic and played on the Army’s baseball team known as “Bat Out of Hell Squadron baseball team. After leaving the army he attended Whitman College and was a Phi Beta Kappa and graduated Cum Laude from Whitman in 1950 with a Masters Degree in Political Science. While enrolled as a student at Whitman he supported his family and studies by managing the McCaw Housing Project at the Veterans Hospital. After graduating he began working at Pioneer Junior High, where he taught history and math for 18 years. During that time his duties also included the seventh grade football coach, ninth grade basketball coach and boy’s counselor. After teaching at Pioneer Junior High, he went on to teach history at Walla Walla Community College. He retired from teaching when he was 59 and began to ardently garden at him home along Mill Creek. Survivors include his wife, Hazel Mae Niva, at home; three sons, Jerry and his wife, Vicki, Bothell, Wash.; Thomas Niva, Walla Walla, and Keith and his wife, Mountlake Terrace, Wash.; a sister, Lola Jean Bullock, Nokomia, Fla.; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, a son, William, in 2002; one grandson, Jimmy; two brothers and two sisters. At his request, there will be no services.
