She was born Jan. 4, 1917, in Wenatchee, Wash., the fourth of nine children to Herbert S. and Jessie Mae (Juday) Ferguson. She was a descendant of the Tetherow family of the "Lost Wagon Train" and "Blue Bucket Mine" saga. In 1936 she married Ernest A. Newton. Together they adopted a son, Michael, in 1947. They were later divorced. She moved to Oregon in 1951, first to Hillsboro, then to Newberg. In 1955 she married Raymond A. Thomas and they farmed in the Newberg area until his death in 1961. She worked as a bookkeeper for Bob's Auto in Newberg and Olinger Lincolin Mercury in Beaverton. In 1970 she moved to Redmond and opened a dress shop, which she ran for a few years. She finished her career as a bookkeeper for Wright Ford in Redmond. She had five acres of land and loved to plant a large garden and enjoyed the outdoors. In 1988 she married James W. Newton, and in 1990 they moved to Dufur and then The Dalles in 1998. They were both active members of the Grange. Jim preceded her in death on Nov. 13, 2004. Survivors include son Michael E. Newton and wife Judi of Sherwood; stepson, James A. Newton and wife Linda of The Dalles; Grandsons Troy of Sherwood, Shawn of Newberg and Michael of Tualatin; step-grandsons, Tygh of Forest Grove and Bradly of Beaverton, and five great grand children. Also surviving are a sister, Almalee Mitchell of Red Cloud Neb., and a brother, Virgil Ferguson of Wenatchee. She was a member of the United Methodist Church of Newberg. In accordance with her wishes no public services will be held. The family will observe private ceremonies of remembrance in conjunction with the disposition of her ashes. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of the Gorge, 751 Myrtle St., The Dalles, OR 97058 or to the American Cancer Society. Arrangements are by Columbia Cremation & Burial.
